I’m going to share a little bit of information that may be detrimental to my website. Many bloggers don’t actually tell you this. Are you stressed? Are you anxious? There are so many websites trying to sell you different information that your brain becomes clogged up and you just need to clear your mind. What do I suggest you do about it? Just chill out.
What Is Information Overload and How Does it Cause Anxiety?
Information overload is defined as this:
It refers to the difficulty a person can have understanding an issue and making decisions that can be caused by the presence of too much information.
This definition was taken from Wikipedia. This idea was made popular in the 1970’s by a man named Alvin Toffler. Have you ever experienced this? For example, you read too many blog posts after work one day, followed by a constant bombardment of advertisements, it can make you feel pretty stressed out.
When you are stressed out like this and your mind is going a mile a minute it can affect so many things. Your sleep will suffer, your testosterone levels drop, and it will generally give you all around brain fog.
What Can You Do About This?
Well – just chill! Start by taking one day per week off of ALL digital devices and news if you are able to. Spend a Sunday watching the sunrise, drink tea as it is rising. Meditate for 20 minutes. Go for a walk outside. Spend quality time with your family. Whatever it is you choose to do, make sure it is something that is relaxing and helps you chill out. I find camping or taking a hike in the county forest really works well for me.
This will rejuvenate you for the week ahead, clear your mind, help you sleep, make you feel healthy, boost your PE efforts and motivate you to get better every day.
Reducing Information Overload in Everyday Life
There are many different tactics that you can use to reduce information overload. If you live in a city there is no getting around the massive amounts of advertising that is clogging up your view, but you can reduce targeted advertising. Here are a few examples:
- E-mail: Check e-mail only once or twice per day and unsubscribe from as many mailing lists as you can
- Television: Save some money and cut your cable bill, everything is available online for free these days.
- Online Advertising: Download and install AdBlock – a completely free browser plugin that will totally unclutter your web browing experience.
- Social Media: Use social media only once per week, it is not going to matter to your friends, unless you use it for business and avoid the sea of selfies and food pictures!
It is essential that every single person takes down time. Especially in the world we live today. If you take the time out of your day to do these things, it will greatly reduce anxiety, clear your mind, and allow you to focus on your goals.
